Parallel Design Group’s Design Partnership with Hub & Spoke

By: Adrienne Evans, Parallel Design Group

Parallel Design Group was honored to be chosen to work side-by-side with Hub & Spoke on their innovative, one-of-a-kind master-planned 94,000 square-foot design center. Located on the Nickel Plate Trail, the Hub of Homebuilding and Design was created as a mixed-use building featuring office space, retail showrooms, a Community Connect coworking space, and a state-of-the-art Makerspace, training facility and event center.

As we envisioned this space with our client, our design intent was to evoke inspiration and innovation through our design and provide an accessible, yet creative, collaborative and educational environment for all.

Starting with a new build and a blank canvas gave us much creative freedom, but as with any project we experienced a few design challenges along the way. Most notably was the challenge to design this space while achieving cohesion under the Hub & Spoke umbrella, yet separation of tenants within the large footprint; offering opportunity for each tenant to feature their own personality.

We also overcame the issue of the space maintaining functionality, without being over-designed. Embracing the mission of the Maker’s space being hands-on, we incorporated the use of raw materials like natural wood tones, metals, concrete, glass and clean white walls to showcase the art from High Frequency Arts, a tenant in the building.

We also had the pleasure of working with Becovic Management, High Frequency Arts, A/Co, Plumbers Supply, BDA and Haven to make their visions come to life.
